I attended my level 1 cert in NY in April 09′ an amazing week in my life. I got to meet some really nice people and I saw some great workouts at their really cool gym. The course was detailed and interesting and I was looking forward to the programming section which came and went kinda quickly, I understand the reasoning for this now, in a free open market the best should rise to the top, and so many of the webpages that I visited seemed to use different methods. Very shortly afterwards I came across Micheal Rutherfords piece about Max effort black box in a copy of The Performance menu, which I still will read today and I knew that this stuff made sense. So not long after I opened in Bandon I implemented a 20 min lifting portion to the class. When Ian and I came together to open Crossfit Cork in Jan 2011 we still maintained that concept.( If you are at a loss as to what I am talking about then jump over to www.crossfit.com where the workout posted is it for the day, so if it says push press 5,5,5,3,3,3 well thats it, there is no metcon, and the metcon days have no strength beforehand shock-horror)
Where is this leading too? well it has to do with the overall vision and scope of Crossfit and to what degree do we no longer follow the Crossfit vision . Actually I don’t know of any Crossfit gym in Ireland that does, they all use some form of structured, periodised and programmed lifting cycle and now with training for the games the words, macrocycle, mesocycle, microcycle and wave loading have become common. I believe this to be a great step forward that will challenge the knowledge and ability of coachs’ working with athletes, and from my perspective why I have worked to increase my Olympic lifting coaching level. And now delving into the world of conjugate method (programming talk ) things get even finer and more complicated but also more interesting and more rewarding. I do however lament the last words of “Fitness in 100 words”-‘Learn to play new sports’
Today I’d like some feedback on what Crossfit Cork means to you as an athlete in respect to your sport, the sport of crossfit or just your happiness.
