CrossFit is a strength and conditioning programme based around mixed modality training. Focusing on the 10 aspects of fitness (listed below). In simple terms CrossFit is a mix up of weightlifting, body weight movements and cardio. It is a very effective way of delivering an all-round fitness. Take this example, normally if someone wants to get “fitter” they run, if someone wants to get stronger they lift weights, if someone wants to get better flexibility they stretch. Well we lump all that into one. Why work on one element when you can work on them all, and in far less time! We use Olympic lifting, power lifting, kettlebells, body weight movements, cardio, basic gymnastics to give you a training session that is varied, challenging and fun.

Why does it cost more than other gyms?

You are paying for coaching and guidance. Most gyms work on the 90/10 rule, hoping that 90% of those that sign up never come back. We want you back! We provide quality coaching in our small group classes (no more than 14 in a class at any one time) and ensure you get what you are paying for. How often have you joined a gym and never went because you didn’t know what to do? We have the programme written out for you and from when the class starts to the very end you are coached throughout your session. Consider it an investment in your health. Most people spend more money on a night out each week than the cost of our membership!

We are Irelands largest CrossFit gym and Corks most impressive strength and conditioning centre with over 8,000sq foot of space with barbells, ketttlebells, bumper plates, pull up bars, olympic rings, 30m sprint track, separate weightlifting gym, 2,000 sq foot of mobility and cool down space upstairs. Ladies and gents toilets with showers in each.

For those on an unlimited membership you can have access to use the gyms facilities during open gym hours too.

And apart for the top class facilities and excellent training we have a wonderful and welcoming community of members that engage in many social events and  have a lot of fun together before, during and after training!

Do I need to be fit?
Not at all!! We work with people of all fitness levels in group and one on one basis. There are no fitness requirements at all to get started with us. Everyone is different and has different strengths and weaknesses. Movements, weights and difficulty can be changed easily to ensure that you are getting a training session suited to your needs and level.20121202-193012

What is a typical training session?
Each training slot is one hour long. This included a (10-15min) warm up, a (15-25min) strength or skill phase and a relatively short conditioning phase (<15min). Training season will vary day to day and week to week. You may never do the same workout twice. Our warm up includes a run, row or skip to get the blood flowing, then some dynamic movements to get you loose, warm and ready for the strength or skill phase. This next part is based around 1 or 2 movements and the aim here is to get stronger, more mobile and more proficient in the movement we are training.

The conditioning phase is what most people associate with CrossFit. The aim of this part is to work up a sweat and improve the efficiency of your cardio respiratory system to deliver more oxygen around the body faster. This could involve running, push ups and squats, or skipping, pressing and pulling, the combinations are endless. The intensity here is determined by your level of fitness. Sessions will be changed up to allow you to push yourself within your own comfort zone (and just a little bit beyond). We are not a boot camp, our aim is not to break you, but to make you better. All we want is for you to work to the best of your abilities, whatever they may be.

What should I wear or bring?
Normal gym gear, runners, shorts, t-shirt, a bottle of water and a can do attitude!

How does it work?
CrossFit works because our brand of fitness is broad and inclusive. We refuse to specialize! There are Ten General Physical Skills we promote at CrossFit. They are:

  • 1. Cardiovascular/respiratory endurance – The ability of body systems to gather, process and
    deliver oxygen.
  • 2. Stamina – The ability of body systems to process, deliver, store, and utilize energy.
  • 3. Strength – The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply force.
  • 4. Flexibility – the ability to maximize the range of motion at a given joint.
  • 5. Power – The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply
    maximum force in minimum time.
  • 6. Speed – The ability to minimize the time cycle of a repeated movement.
  • 7. Coordination – The ability to combine several distinct movement patterns into a singular
    distinct movement.
  • 8. Agility – The ability to minimize transition time from one movement pattern to another.
  • 9. Balance – The ability to control the placement of the bodies center of gravity in relation to
    its support base.
  • 10. Accuracy – The ability to control movement in a given direction or at a given intensity.
