I watched Arnold’s movie Pumping Iron yesterday and I was struck by how similar the world of bodybuilding in the 70’s is to the Crossfit craze of today. A small gym full of guys mainly (a difference to the large amount of girls we have) barbells, squat racks and dumbells in constant use. A strong sense if community and the aim to be the best bodybuilder. It meant leaving no part of your body underdeveloped the same attitude that we have to the metabolic pathways – oxidative, glycolytic, and phosphagen. If it was you had to put the work in and fix it. Arnie mentions how he’s not afraid to faint in the gym and that he’s puked several times but that is what makes champions- pushing through. I saw some of that this week, Anne attacked the Tabata sprints and nearly had all of her classmates beaten only for I shouted at the guys. Now Anne isn’t great at running but to see the determination and drive to make it from wall to wall is the stuff Arnie talked about. I don’t want max effort everyday, that will wear you down but I do hope to see clients work through the discomfort with a focus on the end.
